It is a member of cell division cycle 2 (CDC2) kinase family. CDK9 functions as a catalytic subunit of RNA polymerase II (RNAP II) during its transcription. It forms a multiprotein complex by binding to the P-TEFb (positive transcription elongation factor b) and a cyclin subunit (cyclin T1 or cyclin T2). It plays a vital role in the transcriptional regulation. It phosphorylates the carboxyl-terminal domain (CTD) of RNAPII to accelerate the transcription elongation. It also interacts with HIV-1 Tat protein proving an involvement of this protein in AIDS.
