MFAP5 (microfibrillar associated protein 5), also known as MAGP-2 (microfibril-associated glycoprotein 2) is a firbillin-interacting component of the ECM (extracellular matrix). It is found in elastin-associated or isolated microfibrills. MAGP1 and MAG2 form a family of small extracellular matrix microfibril-associated proteins. It is a marker of chondrocytes and distinguishes them from synovial cells. In endothelial cells, it acts as an antagonist of Notch signaling, thus, facilitating angiogenic cell spouting. MFAP5 protein influences the metastasis and invasion in ovarian cancer, which is mediated by FAK (focal adhesion kinase)/CREB (cAMP response element binding protein)/TNNC1 (troponin C Type 1) signaling. This protein also serves as a marker for poor prognosis in ovarian cancer.
