The gene MUC13 (mucin 13) is mapped to human chromosome 3q21. The gene encodes a transmembrane O-linked glycoprotein. Low levels of MUC13 are present in the epithelium of gastrointestinal, respiratory and reproductive tracts. The protein is predicted to have a tandem repeat domain, three epidermal growth factor like (EGFI-III) domains, a sea urchin sperm protein enterokinase arginine (SEA) domain, a transmembrane domain and a cytoplasmic tail.
