Neuroligin-3 precursor recombinant protein epitope signature tag (PrEST) NLGN3 (neuroligin 3) gene encodes a protein belonging to a family of neuronal cell surface proteins called neuroligins. These are adhesion proteins that bind to a cell surface protein called β-neurexin to form functional synapses. The gene NLGN3 is localized to Xq13 and the encoded protein is localized to excitatory glutamatergic axons. Mutation in this gene may cause intracellular retention of the mutant protein leading to loss of synaptic function. A point mutation in this gene was first observed in two brothers, one with autism and the other with Asperger syndrome.
