It mainly mediates the movement of neurotransmitters, osmolytes (betaine, taurine and creatine), and amino acids. SLC6A18 is expressed at the luminal membrane of kidney proximal tubules. It mediates the transport of neutral amino acids in a sodium and chloride dependent manner. The expression of SLC6A18 is associated with increased risk of myocardial infarction in a Japanese population.
