Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) Agar, 15x100mm, 10/Pk is a selective and differential medium formulated for the isolation and differentiation of Gram-negative enteric bacteria, particularly coliforms. The medium is widely used in clinical, food, water, and environmental microbiology to distinguish lactose fermenters from non-fermenters within the Enterobacteriaceae family.

The formulation includes eosin Y and methylene blue dyes, which inhibit Gram-positive organisms and act as pH indicators. Lactose-fermenting bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, produce acid that precipitates the dyes, forming colonies with a characteristic metallic green sheen. Other lactose fermenters appear pink to purple, while non-fermenters, such as Salmonella and Shigella, remain colorless or transparent. Each plate is prepared with a consistent depth of sterile agar to ensure reliable performance in diagnostic workflows.
