MacConkey Agar 20mL Plates, 10/Pk is a selective and differential medium designed for the isolation of Gram-negative enteric bacteria and the differentiation of lactose fermenters from non-lactose fermenters. It is widely used in clinical, food, water, and research microbiology to recover and distinguish members of the Enterobacteriaceae family such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, and Salmonella species.

The formulation contains bile salts and crystal violet, which inhibit the growth of Gram-positive organisms, ensuring selective recovery of Gram-negative bacteria. Lactose and the pH indicator neutral red allow for differentiation: lactose fermenters produce pink to red colonies, while non-lactose fermenters appear colorless or transparent. Each plate is pre-poured with 20mL of sterile agar to provide consistent depth and reliable growth conditions.
