Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA) is a selective and differential microbiological medium designed for the isolation and identification of Staphylococcus species, particularly Staphylococcus aureus. It contains a high concentration of sodium chloride, which inhibits the growth of most other bacteria, and mannitol as a fermentable carbohydrate.

This agar is widely used in clinical and research laboratories to differentiate mannitol-fermenting Staphylococcus aureus, which produces acid that changes the phenol red indicator from red to yellow, from non-fermenting staphylococci and other bacteria. Its selective and differential properties make it a reliable medium for bacterial screening and identification.

Mannitol Salt Agar is intended for laboratory and microbiological research use only and is not suitable for human consumption. Proper storage at recommended conditions is advised to maintain medium quality and effectiveness.
